Common repairs

Here are some of the most common repairs that we provide for your PC or Laptop

Hardware Replacement

From faulty power supplies to a broken fan, the complexity inside of a desktop pc or laptop pc can be very intimidating for the average user. A single failing component inside of a computer can have a ripple effect throughout the rest of the machine, causing problems with nearly everything inside.

Hardware Upgrades

A slow or lagging computer can absolutely ruin your entire experience after you power up your desktop or laptop PC. A task as simple as writing a book report can be more frustrating than it needs to be if your computer will not cooperate with simple commands like clicking a link or opening a browser. Equally frustrating could be a gaming experience on a computer that just isn’t up to speed anymore.

The age of the machine can be one of the biggest reasons your computer feels slower than usual. Outdated and worn-out components like the hard drive or fans can cause very noticeable problems as soon as you power your PC on. No matter the task, having to wait for your computer to respond can be very annoying, but that does not mean your computer is meant for recycling. After a proper diagnosis and with a bit of research, upgrades are almost always possible on any PC setup. Even something as simple as swapping out an aging Hard Drive for a newer Solid-State Drive can lead to a completely different and improved computing experience. The technology that makes up these newer drives is as noticeable as the differences between night and day. With absolutely no moving parts (unlike older hard disk drives), solid-state drives can execute commands, read and write data, and absolutely fly through immense amounts of information seemingly instantaneously. Almost every computer or gaming console that enters our shop at Computers Plus Repair Center is offered as an immediate upgrade because of the new, fresh user experience.

Routine maintenance of a desktop or laptop PC is also highly recommended as they can be so stationary that they tend to accumulate lots of dust and lint inside them, greatly slowing them down. Enough accumulation inside of them can start to insulate the components, leading to overheating and slowing down the entire system.

Fans and heat sinks can get clogged with enough dust build-up and that can contribute to the system not working correctly as their main function is to dissipate the heat from major components of the computer. Another tool used to keep items like the processor cool is thermal paste (or thermal grease).

Applied directly to a processor, thermal paste allows for a seamless and efficient transfer of heat from it to the base of the heat sink. Successful installation of new thermal paste will ensure heat transfer between the two, up the fins of the heat sink to then be distributed by the fan above. Some larger gaming computers have moved from the traditional heat sink/fan combination to an AIO or all-in-one cooling solution that uses liquid, tubes, and radiators to keep the processor cool but, it too uses thermal paste to fill the microscopic gaps between them. Although the paste inside your computer only needs to be replaced every few years, taking this extra step at least that often is crucial in keeping your computer running for years and years to come.

Speed can also be increased inside a desktop or laptop PC but increasing the amount of RAM, or memory, currently installed. Used to temporarily store information that the PC is using to compute and execute immediately, the amount of RAM will determine how quickly and smoothly the machine can work. Operating in tandem with other components in the computer, an increase in memory can lead to robust performance improvements. The age and style of your machine will determine what type of RAM is compatible with your system as not all of them are interchangeable.

When looking to increase the performance of your machine, Computers Plus Repair Center in El Paso, Texas is your one-stop shop for all your upgrade and tuning needs. We can get you ready for the next big project or gaming tournament quickly and efficiently with all the tools necessary to make the most of your setup and use your desktop PC to its fullest potential.

Software Issues

In an ever-changing world when it comes to computers and electronics, the software can quickly become outdated and cause your desktop PC to stop working properly. Microsoft routinely -almost daily- releases updates to their operating system for security and compatibility issues but these updates don’t always go smoothly.

Routine and/or periodical software updates are almost always intended to increase performance and keep you and your computer more secure but now and then, an update can inadvertently cause issues. PC users are usually very familiar with regular software updates coming in from Microsoft, the developer of the

Windows operating system, to the point that they are hardly noticed after a while. Unfortunately, when a user does notice an update coming in for their PC, it’s because something has gone wrong. As a fail-safe,

Microsoft has given users the ability to roll back their updates and create points in time to which users can restore their machines in the event of an update proving fatal to their operation of them. This method, although ambitious, does not always prove successful.

Diagnosing a fatal software issue is pretty straightforward. If your PC is unable to boot up to the Windows login screen, you more than likely are having a software problem. The solution to those problems isn’t always so simple and, in terms of your personal information, it’s usually too late to be saved so regular backups are highly recommended at all times.

Issues such as these are easily diagnosed by the technicians at Computers Plus Repair Center. Being able to identify problems like these quickly means we can get to resolving them that much faster. With experience spanning the better part of the last two decades, our technicians can get your machine back up and running faster and more efficiently than most other shops in the area.

When a user’s computer fails, the possibility of losing all the photos, music, videos, and documents is always a huge possibility. There are many reasons why your PC could face an event that renders it unusable but the state of your data is not always so sure. Backing up your data after a major failure can be possible, depending on the nature and extent of the failure.

The technicians at Computers Plus Repair Center have the experience and tools necessary to back up or recover lost or damaged files from your old hard drive and make sure that it is saved to a new, secured one. Laptop Broken Screen

The mobility and portability of a laptop pc are what truly sets the technology apart but it can come with a cost. Since it is potentially subject to so much more abuse and wear than a desktop computer, laptops are built to withstand a bit more wear but that does not make them indestructible. Half of the computer itself is the display which is also the most delicate component and most likely to sustain damage.

The fragility of the screen is probably the biggest drawback of a laptop computer. With laptops being manufactured lighter and thinner with each new model by almost all manufacturers, the number of broken screens coming into the shop at Computers Plus Repair Center is on the rise.

A broken laptop screen does not necessarily mean that the display is cracked or shattered, however. Distortion in the picture of any kind such as:

  • Screen completely black when powered on
  • Screen completely white when powered on
  • Colored lines running through the display either horizontally or vertically
  • Portions of the display not turning on
  • The backlight of the screen not turning on
  • Image looking faint or pale

If you happen to be experiencing any of these symptoms with your laptop pc, it is very possible that the screen itself may need to be replaced. In rare instances, these types of issues can be caused by a cabling issue. The cables connecting the laptop screen to the motherboard inside the computer can get disconnected, come loose, or even cut so a proper and complete diagnostic by trained technicians is the best idea when trying to get your machine back up and running like new again.

Laptop Charging Issue

As portable as a laptop pc is, more often than not, the computer relies heavily on its ability to charge its internal battery to keep you mobile. The charging system in almost all laptops is fairly similar. The charger, the charging port, the system between the port and the battery, and the battery itself all make up its power system of it. Each component in the system plays a crucial role in making it truly portable.

A faulty charger is one of the easiest investigations you can perform to determine a charging issue. If you notice your battery percentage dropping while it is plugged in, not recognizing the charger when it is connected to the computer, or the battery charging too rapidly, the charger could be failing.

Trying a different charger is a very straightforward way of identifying the bad part and may very well get you back on your way. The same results with a new charger would usually require further investigation by a properly trained technician like those at Computers Plus Repair Center.

After having ruled out a faulty charger, the rest of the charging system is brought into question. A damaged charging port or even a bad battery can be the culprit of such problems. The disassembly and testing of the components inside the laptop pc would be needed to narrow down which one or combination of them has failed. The testing of the voltage and amperage of the entire power system is a delicate and potentially dangerous task.

Fatal damage to the rest of the laptop or even the user is possible if not tested correctly so it is not recommended to be performed by the average user. Once successfully identified, the faulty component can be repaired or replaced by a technician and then tested thoroughly again to ensure that there are no other problems.

To start off my experience I was unsure of the store location and its reputation, but after talking with the computer technician my concerns were assuaged. He was fluent in his field, respectful, professional, and I could tell this store and their ideals really put the customers first. The computer I brought in was taken care of to the best degree and the technician was able to diagnose several problems. He was able to fix my PC in a timely manner and my PC looked brand new. They did a great job resurrecting my wife's computer. They also checked the overall build and cleaned the case and dusty components. The price for labor and parts was reasonable and they didn't try to sell me on upgrades or unnecessary replacement parts. Like an honest mechanic, they will have my repeat business. Highly recommended.
