Common Repairs
Here are some of the most common repairs that we provide for your iPad
iPad Broken Screen
A broken screen on an iPad can be nothing short of heartbreaking as soon as it happens and can have some long-lasting effects. As thin and fragile as the glass is on the front, it is truly remarkable how it can withstand so much abuse seeing as how it is constantly being touched and rubbed. As durable as Apple has tried to build them, it does not take much to break an iPad’s screen.
Typically built of two main components, the screen on an iPad contains the touchscreen and the LCD panel. The touchscreen is the thin glass on the front of the device that allows it to respond to touch and gestures while the LCD panel behind it is the display (where the image is generated). The iPad is developed and manufactured to the most minute precision so that these two parts match up so perfectly that users don’t usually know that they are separate pieces. Any misalignment in these two would immediately be obvious as soon as it starts getting used.
When it comes to the touchscreen itself, the smallest crack or chip in the glass it is made of can start as a minor issue but will almost always get worse over time. Just like with any piece of glass, a crack in the screen can spread throughout the entire panel and can be extremely sharp to the touch if enough of the edges are exposed.
A crack in the touchscreen can cause the screen to start acting erratically, too. Without it being intact, the iPad can start to develop “ghost touches” or respond to manipulation that is not deliberately being entered by the user. As soon as any damage to the touchscreen is noticed by the user, professional attention should be made to it as the “ghost touches” can lead to unfavorable consequences. Apple security on all their devices can disable the device if the password is entered incorrectly too many times. These unintended screen touches can cause the iPad to respond as if the incorrect password is being entered, leading to its disabling of it. Early detection and replacement of the touchscreen are very highly recommended to prevent a problem such as this.
If your iPad does take a fall and doesn’t necessarily crack the touchscreen, the LCD panel can sustain damage instead. A completely black screen or white screen, colored lines running through the display either horizontally or vertically, distortion in the images, or parts of the display not working at all are all sure indications that the LCD has been damaged in some way. One very remote possibility when it comes to displaying issues is the LCD connector being unseated from its mate on the motherboard. As tight and compact as Apple designs its products, the chances of the connectors coming apart are very slim. The materials used to construct them are sturdy enough to keep everything in place but the chances of it becoming dislodged are always there.
Luckily, unlike their smaller phone counterparts, each component of the iPad screen can be replaced separately. The LCD and touchscreen are, more often than not, two unique and individual parts that can be replaced independently of each other reducing the expense incurred by the user when only one of the two is damaged. The delicateness of the internal components cannot be stressed enough, however. Only properly trained technicians should attempt to disassemble and/or replace any components inside of an iPad to ensure no further damage is done.
At Computers Plus Repair Center, we have the experience and expertise to safely replace any component inside your iPad, no matter the model or generation, with minimal risk to any other components inside. Charging Issues
A battery that will not hold a charge can be a nuisance no matter what kind of device you are using but on an iPad, it can be particularly frustrating since it is so difficult to replace it. Fortunately, Apple has a couple of tools you can use to verify how healthy the battery is along with some basic troubleshooting steps you can take to determine what the problem is.
Within the iPad’s settings, you will find a battery menu with lots of useful information like adjustments based on what kind of usage you plan on having and various power-saving options. In recent software updates, Apple has included the ability to see the health of your iPad’s battery. This little feature is very useful because, over time, your iPad’s battery will wear out. As is the case with anything rechargeable, each time a battery is charged it will hold less and less power.
The battery health reading on the iPad will show you the total percentage of the original 100% it will charge to. This kind of degradation is normal for electronics of all types but the intuitiveness of the iPad is one big (not often mentioned) feature that deserves a lot more recognition. Once the battery health falls to a certain point, the iPad will alert the user that “Service is Required” for it. This means that the total charging power for it has fallen to a point that will significantly affect the user’s experience based on their usage habits and the battery should be replaced.
The replacement of the battery in an iPad is not a simple task and should not be attempted by anyone not properly trained in the disassembly of the tablet. The entire touchscreen panel and LCD behind it must be removed with extreme care along with the precise disconnection of several components underneath before the battery can be removed.
Attempting to disassemble any model iPad without adequate knowledge or experience could result in further damage to any aspect of it. The technicians at Computers Plus Repair Center in El Paso, Texas have all the tools and experience necessary to pull out the old battery in your iPad and replace it with a new one to get you back in business.
Another issue when it comes to charging could be the charger itself which is one of the easiest to troubleshoot in terms of hardware. Simply replacing the charging cable or the A/C power adapter the cable plugs into can yield positive results if one of those two is beginning to or has already failed. With as much stress the charging cable has to endure, it is not uncommon for them to stop working abruptly, and is almost always immediately noticeable to iPad owners.
Software Issues
Apple has a stellar track record when it comes to solid software in their iPads but on occasion, issues can present themselves that cannot be fixed by just simply turning it off and back on again. With the almost constant barrage of updates sent out by Apple for all supported iPads to address security and bug issues, some of them are bound to install incorrectly or end up corrupting the system. Luckily, some steps can be taken to get your iPad back up and running.
Much like the iPhone, the iPad is one of the best examples of hardware and software developed for one another to make the operation and servicing of either quite seamless. Apple thoroughly tests its software with each version of the iPad before sending it out to devices but, because of the nature of the issues caused by software problems, physical disassembly may be required.
Because the newer iPads are designed to be water-resistant by nature, none of the components are removable by the average user. Sometimes, to get an iPad out of a boot loop or fix one that has frozen and will not respond, is to disconnect and reconnect the battery. A simple task on any other tablet, Apple designs and builds theirs so that the iPad has to be disassembled to do it and should only be attempted by a properly trained technician. This applies to all models and versions of the iPad with a few examples listed below:
- The regular iPad
- iPad Air
- iPad Mini
- iPad Pro
At Computers Plus Repair Center, issues of all types when it comes to the iPad, no matter the model, are a routine order. Liquid Damage Repair
As much as the iPad has become such a huge part of the lives of so many people, accidents are bound to happen from time to time. Whether it is dropped into water or some other liquid is spilled onto it, the potential for the tablet to never act the same way again is pretty high.
Most newer generation iPads are built with a certain level of water resistance enabling them to withstand small spills or dips into the pool but this resistance is not intended for long durations of exposure to liquid. Any other flaws that the iPad may have before being wet or having been previously repaired will leave the device susceptible to damage it was originally designed to withstand.
A cracked screen or back cover on an iPad negates the water resistance because new openings and vulnerabilities are created that way.
The complete disassembly of an iPad that is thought to be damaged by liquid is the first step in trying to repair any damage caused by it.
At Computers Plus Repair Center, we use state-of-the-art tools and equipment to safely disassemble and extract the components most vulnerable to damage caused by liquid and then thoroughly clean them and any corrosion or oxidation that may prevent the device from working properly.
The success rate for the liquid damage treatment process is not as high as many other more common repairs, unfortunately. Many factors can contribute to the efficacy of the process such as:
- The extent of any prior physical damage
- The amount of time the iPad spent in or was exposed to the liquid
- The amount of time that has gone by since the exposure
- How much the iPad was used since it got wet
Computers Plus Repair Center in El Paso, Texas is always ready to explain all your options when dealing with an iPad that is suspected to be damaged by liquid. Our team is thoroughly trained to identify the signs of liquid damage and catch it early enough in the diagnostic process to provide you with an accurate quote as soon as possible after bringing your iPad into our shop.
